About Arcilla
Arcilla is a handmade pottery studio founded by the artist Afnan Abbas, after more than ten years spent between clay, the wheel and the kiln. Every piece that leaves the studio begins as a handful of clay in her hands and ends as a work of art that carries the Arcilla stamp on its base.
The artist
Afnan Abbas is a ceramic artist who has made handmade pottery her language for more than ten years. She shapes her pieces on the wheel and by hand, blending the spirit of our heritage with a contemporary eye, and works with a craft that places her pieces among world class studio ceramics: pieces made to be used every day, and collected the way works of art are collected.
She has been invited to take part in many handicraft exhibitions in Saudi Arabia and across the region, carrying Arcilla pieces to audiences who value handmade work and know its worth.
The stamp: a promise of authenticity
On the base of every piece is a small stamp bearing the Arcilla name. It is the signature of the artist, and proof that the piece was shaped by hand in the studio, an original and never a factory copy. Because a hand never repeats itself, no two pieces are ever exactly alike.
Workshops and courses
Afnan believes clay is learned through the hands before the eyes, so she leads workshops and courses for anyone trying the wheel for the first time and for those who want to grow what they have started. Upcoming dates are in Workshops.
Why Arcilla?
Arcilla is the Spanish word for clay. We chose it because everything we make begins with it. Read the story of the clay
